The Family Garden Initiative™ is a volunteer-driven, community outreach and nutrition program developed by The Filtrexx Foundation and Church of the Open Door. The initiative serves low-maintenance, above-ground, GardenSoxx® Gardens to low-income families within the community.
The mission is to help heal urban communities through gardens that yield freshly grown produce for families. True greatness is serving (Matthew 23:11). The Family Garden Initiative™ centers around building gardens for low-income families, and community organizations that directly serve urban residents in need.
In 2010, 300 GardenSoxx® were distributed to Lorain County residents by volunteers. The following year, the project more than doubled its goal and distributed 750 GardenSoxx® gardens to low-income families in the county. In addition, families received a guidebook that includes growing instructions and recipes to educate and encourage novice gardeners and set them up for success.
